Jeddah – Fifteen Yemen Coast Guard (YCG) members are currently in the Republic of Seychelles participating in a 4-week specialized maritime training program sponsored by the
U.S. Department of State’s Export Control and Border Security (EXBS) program.
This training, delivered by the United Nations Office of Drugs and Crime (UNODC) Global Maritime Crime Program (GMCP), consists of classroom and practical exercises on ship boarding and interdicting illicit weapons, ballistic missile components, and Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) materials.
This EXBS activity is a result of intensive efforts and multinational cooperation by the Republic of Yemen Government (ROYG), the U.S. Government, and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, through the Yemen Security Working Group (YSWG). The YSWG supports the rebuilding of the YCG, enabling it to secure Yemeni ports, regional waters, and to combat piracy and smuggling.
The training marks a significant milestone in EXBS assistance to the Yemen Coast Guard, and contributes to the ROYG’s efforts to re-establish a viable border protection force.
