Sanaa – United States Ambassador to Yemen Matthew H. Tueller pledged “steadfast and continuing U.S. support to the government of Yemen throughout the political transition process and beyond” during his official presentation of credentials to Republic of Yemen President Abdo Mansour Hadi on Tuesday (June 10).
During the presentation ceremony, held at Yemen’s Presidential Palace in the capital, Sanaa, Ambassador Tueller highlighted the close partnership between the United States and Yemen, citing his mandate from President Obama and Secretary of State Kerry to deepen bilateral relations at this historical time in Yemen, as the Yemeni government confronts those entities who threaten the sovereignty and stability of the State. Ambassador Tueller pledged to continue U.S. humanitarian assistance programs as well as further strengthen support for economic and security reforms.
“Through their political leaders, the people of Yemen are committed to establishing a new, democratic, peaceful, and prosperous future for their children and grandchildren; the United States has – and will continue – to stand with you as both a friend and a partner, in realizing this goal,” Tueller said.
Citing his 2000 service in Yemen, Tueller remarked that he is looking forward to renewing old ties and is eager to begin “meeting and hearing from Yemenis representing all walks of life; especially youth and civil society.”
Ambassador Tueller was nominated as United States Ambassador to Yemen by President Barack Obama on January 17th, 2014. His nomination was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on March 27th, and he was sworn in by U. S. Secretary of State John F. Kerry on May 8th. He arrived in Sana’a on May 27th 2014.
United States support for Yemen totals more than $630 million and is built on assistance in humanitarian, political, economic, and security sectors. In addition, the United States supports the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Initiative as well as multilateral support through partnerships with the European Union and United Nations.
